Hacienda Alsacia (Starbucks Coffee Farm)

Hacienda Alsacia is a working coffee farm located on the slopes of Poás Volcano, about an hour from San José. It serves as Starbucks’ global research and development farm, where different coffee varieties are grown and tested under real conditions.

The entire coffee area is decorated with drawings, many beautiful drawings related to coffee and animals. This wall drawing is right next to the entrance.

🌱 Why is it unique?

Starbucks owns hundreds of stores worldwide, but only here, on 240 hectares on the slopes of the Poás Volcano, can you see where the beans for Starbucks Reserve and micro-lot coffees are grown.

Agronomy headquarters

Hacienda Alsacia serves as Starbucks’ global agronomy headquarters — developing new coffee varieties resistant to diseases and climate change, and sharing this knowledge with farmers worldwide for free. This helps make coffee production more sustainable and assists small farms in improving yield and quality.

Coffee Plants

Rows of coffee plants grow along the hillside, each labeled with information about the variety and growing conditions.

🌿 Greener Store and sustainability
The Visitor Center café on the farm is certified as a Starbucks Greener Store — powered by solar energy, built with local materials, and designed to minimize waste and conserve resources.

Natural Light

Large windows and open spaces let in natural light throughout the visitor areas.

Lush greenery

Wooden tables are placed facing the landscape, inviting visitors to sit, drink coffee, and spend time without rushing. Lush greenery throughout the cafe.The entire grounds are lushly green. Inside, there are huge pots of flowers and plants. The plants hang beautifully from above.

Drying Coffee

Coffee beans are laid out to dry, spread evenly and turned regularly. This stage is essential and directly affects flavor and quality.

Benches and shaded seating areas are spread across the property, offering quiet spots to stop and take in the surroundings.

Waterfall

The property includes a small waterfall, open walking paths, and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding hills. There’s also a café and shop offering Costa Rica–themed mugs, brewing equipment, and other coffee-related souvenirs. Hacienda Alsacia combines agriculture, education, and landscape in a single, accessible location.

Wall painting Rualdo

One of the walls at Starbucks Hacienda Alsacia, Poás features a stunning mural of the Rualdo, the local name for the Golden-browed Chlorophonia. This small, colorful bird is endemic to the highland forests of Costa Rica and is celebrated for its bright green body and striking golden-yellow stripe above its eyes.
The Golden-browed Chlorophonia is a secretive and rare bird, often found in the canopy feeding on fruits.

Starbucks is aiming not just to sell coffee, but to connect with the local community and culture, showcasing Costa Rican art and employing local talent — as well as serving visitors in one of Costa Rica’s most vibrant seaside towns.

The interior design incorporates murals by Costa Rican artist Elizabeth Argüello and macramé artwork by the local collective EntreNudos — creating a space that reflects the natural, artistic and cultural vibe of Guanacaste.
