A grand hall built of rich wood and warm lighting. But there’s a story here: the staff told me that a snake once crawled deep into the structure of one of these wooden tables. It was impossible to coax it out, so they had no choice but to break the furniture apart to safely remove the uninvited guest.

Meet the Penelope purpurascens, or the Crested Guan. This one greeted me right by the reception, acting like the true owner of the property.

My basecamp for the trip. Simple, minimalist interiors, but the real masterpiece is the private balcony framing the majestic Arenal Volcano.

The trail to the restaurant is a tunnel of dense greenery. It feels like walking through a living, breathing emerald corridor.

In the thick brush, I caught a glimpse of an Agouti (Dasyprocta punctata), often called "Guatusa" in Costa Rica. These agile rodents are the gardeners of the forest, burying seeds and helping the jungle regenerate. They are incredibly skittish, so capturing this moment felt like a small victory.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the forest transformed. I set out on a night walk through the hotel grounds, armed with a flashlight and a sense of wonder. The darkness revealed a completely different world. Night exploration reveals a different side of the hotel. Finding this fig tree in the dark made me feel like an early explorer discovering a hidden treasure.

The Prothysana felderi. Known for its striking red, black, and white coloration, it literally looks like a piece of high-end, fuzzy shag carpet. With its striking red, black, and white fuzz, it’s a warning sign from nature: its hairs are highly irritating and can cause a painful stinging sensation. This larva will eventually transform into a moth, though its striking "carpet" stage is definitely its most memorable form.

The Rhinostomus barbirostris. This impressive insect looks like something out of a fantasy novel with its unique, elongated snout. Their most distinct feature is the long rostrum (snout) which, in males, is covered in hair—giving them their "bearded" name. They are fascinating creatures that spend their lifecycle in decaying palms, acting as decomposers in the forest ecosystem.

Finally, a sighting! The Masked Tree Frog(Smilisca phaeota) is perfectly adapted to the damp, lush environment of Arenal. These amphibians are experts of disguise; they can change their skin color from light brown to a darker pattern to blend perfectly into the leaf litter or tree bark. They are nocturnal hunters, relying on their sticky toe pads to navigate the wet vegetation. Holding one, you realize how delicate their skin is—a thin, permeable barrier that makes them incredibly sensitive to the environment.

The next morning, we set out on the "Puma Trail," an immersive hike located right on the hotel grounds. For 20,000 colones, you get access to this deep forest experience that feels miles away from civilization. The trail is a two-hour journey through dense, humid jungle, crossing the river multiple times via swaying hanging bridges. It’s an incredible way to test your endurance while watching the rainforest canopy shift and change as you climb higher.
![[digital project] image of pr tips infographic (for a pr firm)](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/687c4c4d12c709bfff808b11/6a2364f8f2ec66ee4c2d5667_89.jpg)
Walking the Puma Trail was more than just a hike; it was a deep dive into the nervous system of the rainforest. The jungle here isn’t just a collection of trees—it’s a chaotic, perfectly balanced machine where every insect, predator, and leaf plays a critical role. When you step off the trail, you realize that the forest doesn’t exist for us to observe; we are just lucky enough to be invited in for a while.

A giant Trechalea (Family Trechaleidae) spider found near the river. Unlike many spiders that weave stationary webs, these are semi-aquatic hunters. They spend their time on rocks or leaves near the water, using their sensitive legs to detect the tiniest ripples on the surface—vibrations made by small fish or aquatic insects. They are incredibly fast, capable of skittering across the water's surface as if it were solid ground.

This baby frog is so small it covers only a third of my fingertip. It’s mind-blowing to think such a tiny life form survives in this vast ecosystem.

This is the iconic Strawberry Poison-Dart Frog (Oophaga pumilio), better known as the "Blue Jeans" frog. Their vibrant red body and contrasting blue "pants" are a classic example of aposematism—a warning signal to predators that they are highly toxic. Despite their tiny size, these frogs are fiercely territorial. Interestingly, the female carries her tadpoles on her back to small pools of water inside bromeliads, showing a level of parental care that is rare among amphibians.

The Arenal Volcano commands attention not through active eruptions, but through its sheer, symmetrical perfection. Even without visible lava flows, the rugged, weathered texture of its slopes tells the story of a landscape constantly being reshaped by volcanic forces. It is a massive, dark silhouette against the tropical sky.
![[digital project] image of pr tips infographic (for a pr firm)](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/687c4c4d12c709bfff808b11/6a2364fcca19cf3fe0b0cb41_119.jpg)
Zooming in, the focus shifts from the peak to the vibrant life at its base. The valley is a chaotic, thick tapestry of deep emerald greens. You can see how the jungle aggressively climbs the volcanic soil, with dense canopies, massive ferns, and tangled vines completely swathing the landscape. It’s a breathtaking display of nature’s ability to thrive and blanket even the most rugged volcanic terrain in life.

The famous "Elephant Ear" plant (Alocasia). The leaves are massive, creating natural umbrellas for the forest floor.
Their massive, heart-shaped leaves are designed to capture as much filtered sunlight as possible under the thick canopy, while also acting as giant umbrellas during the intense tropical downpours. It’s wild to see how big they get when they have the perfect humid conditions to thrive.
![[digital project] image of pr tips infographic (for a pr firm)](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/687c4c4d12c709bfff808b11/6a2364fcfaa14b8e901e8f93_121.jpg)
Meet the Ameiva (Ameiva festiva). These lizards are the true sprinters of the jungle floor. Unlike the more sedentary geckos, the Ameiva is constantly in motion, darting through the leaf litter in search of insects. They are incredibly alert—the moment you make a sound, they dash away with lighting speed.

A macro view reveals their incredible camouflage. Their scales are iridescent, shifting from deep greens to brownish tones, which allows them to disappear instantly when they stop moving. Look closely at their long, whip-like tails and streamlined bodies—they are perfectly evolved to navigate the complex obstacles of the forest floor, from fallen branches to dense patches of ferns.
![[digital project] image of pr tips infographic (for a pr firm)](https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/687c4c4d12c709bfff808b11/6a2364f56845825ac042f977_70.jpg)
Looking left from the hanging bridge, the jungle reveals its density. It’s a vertical world of ferns, vines, and ancient trunks reaching up for the light.

Standing in the middle of the bridge, you feel the forest swaying beneath you. It’s the best way to get a bird’s-eye view of the canopy layers that you’d never see from the ground.

This beetle is a Chalcolepidius limbatus, a large and impressive species of click beetle. It is commonly referred to as a "Click Beetle" or, locally, as "quiebra palitos" (which translates to "stick-breaker"). These insects are well-known for their unique defense mechanism: when threatened, they can snap their thorax with a loud clicking sound to propel themselves into the air and escape predators. Beyond their agility, they are a fascinating sight to spot among the dense vegetation of the forest.

The Strobilanthes dyerianus, or Persian Shield, is one of the most visually arresting plants in the tropical understory. What makes it special is its iridescence; the leaves aren't just purple, they seem to shimmer with a metallic, silvery-violet sheen when the light hits them. The dark green veining provides a sharp, aesthetic contrast to the vibrant foliage. In the wild, this color is a strategic choice—it helps the plant absorb more light in the deep shade of the jungle floor, allowing it to thrive in the low-light environments where other plants might struggle to photosynthesize.

This is the Guepinia helvelloides, commonly known as the "Apricot Jelly" or "Salmon Salad" fungus. It’s impossible to miss on the dark, damp forest floor; its vibrant, translucent pink-to-orange hues stand out like neon lights against the decaying leaves. When you touch it, you’ll find it has a uniquely rubbery, jelly-like texture—nature’s own gummy candy, though definitely not for eating. It thrives in the high humidity of the Arenal rainforest, slowly decomposing wood and cycling nutrients back into the soil.

Meet the "Tortoise Beetle" (subfamily Cassidinae). They are the living tanks of the insect world. Their shell is remarkably rounded and often translucent at the edges, which serves as a perfect shield, allowing them to flatten themselves against a leaf and become virtually invisible to predators. Some species in this group can even change color when disturbed, shifting from brilliant metallic gold or green to a dull brown. Watching one navigate a leaf is like watching a tiny, prehistoric armored vehicle on a slow-motion mission.

A little turtle statue at the suvinire shop—a quirky, grounded symbol of our stay at the Lost Iguana.

On the way out, I couldn't help but stop for this sign. It’s actually an advertisement for another local hotel, but the design is pure genius—a bunch of cute dogs wearing caps, welcoming travelers. It’s a whimsical little detail that perfectly rounds out the personality of this area. In a land of serious volcanoes and wild jungle creatures, sometimes a bit of humor is the best way to say "see you next time."
